In this article, we will talk about the symbol of Yin and Yang, and about how much it has.

We all certainly saw this sign in which black and white are opposed to each other, but at the same time, as if smoothly flow from one to another. The lines of their connection are round and smooth, there is no sharp transition that distinguishes between black and white. What does it all mean?
And it means this popular symbol, if you generalize all the concepts included in it, the eternal struggle and the merger of opposites.
Image of the Yin-Yang symbol
- Black on the sign of the symbol is indicated.
- White on the sign is indicated by yang.
A circle symbolizing infinity, conditionally divided into two parts - this sign appears.
- Conditionally, because the black and white halves are not divided in diameter, but smoothly rounded, entering each other.
- In each of the parts there is a small circle of contrasting with a common background of color - this is a symbol of presence in all opposites.
- The wavy roundings at the place of separation of two parts indicate the circular movement of Yin and Yang, then the advancing, now retreating to each other, like sea waves, rolling ashore and retreating back into the sea.
Where did the Yin and Yang symbol come from?
There is a version (in particular, a doctor of historical sciences adheres to it, an in -depth studying culture of the East, Alexei Maslov), that at the very beginning of our era, this symbol came from Buddhism. There is also a hypothesis that initially the sign symbolized the illumination and darkness of the mountain slopes, periodically changing their position.
The famous “Book of Changes” uses Yin and Yang precisely to demonstrate contrast: white and black, soft and hard. The further the philosophical positions of Taoism developed, the more polar the concepts invested in these two symbols.
They were used in almost all teachings and directions of China's philosophy. The dual nature of Yin-Yang has become a fundamental principle not only in philosophy, but also in medicine, music, various sciences of this country.
The essence of the Yin-Yang symbol
Chinese sages distinguish two aspects that are laid down in the Yin-Yang symbol.
- First: There is nothing constant, changes are constantly taking place in the world.
- Second: The contrast not only demonstrates the difference, but also helps to better understand the opposite sides in comparison and mutual addition to each other.
After all, how can one understand what darkness is if you do not know that there is light. Similarly, the opposite. So, to create and adhere to such balance in all areas of life is the main goal of the entire being of mankind.
Elements Yin and Yang
It is impossible to say that some of these two principles represented in Yin-Yang is positive, and some are negative. How to determine that the first, and that the second is earth or heaven? They are opposite to each other, but, for example, during the rain merge together.
It was such a fusion that became the basis for the emergence of the concept of five elements that constantly interact. One nourishes the other and thus creates it, forming a cyclic process. But vice versa, each element “extinguishes” the other to some extent, destroying or weakening it.
- The tree symbolizes the beginning. This can relate to anything: by the beginning of the day, the beginning of life, etc. And, of course, the beginning in Chinese philosophy is the East. This element is made more weak fire and earth, stronger - water and metal feeding it.
- Fire. As a day follows in the morning, and the fire is followed by a fire. It enhance its earth and wood, and weaken the water and metal accordingly.
- Earth is born by fire. Perhaps we are talking about fertilizer with ashes. The Earth symbolizes the middle, associated with the yellow color of the mature ear. It is weakened by water and metal, and on the contrary, fire and wood make the earth more strongly.
- Metal - The next element that corresponds to the fall of the year or life. This element weakens from wood and water, increasing earth - black and green. Earth and fire are poured.
- Water - The last of the five elements, generated by metal. The end of the cycle, calm and night - this is how this element is interpreted. Weakened by wood and fire, enhanced by earth and metal, water is associated with winter, which goes into spring, i.e. into a tree. The cycle is finished.
It should be noted that each of the elements is dual in nature and includes two more opposites: the female and masculine principle, which are also impossible without each other.
Procurations Yin and Yang
The concepts, identical yin-yang, as a fusion of opposites, are present in many teachings and philosophy. For example, in Hinduism there is a character of Purusha, who is interpreted as a man, the masculine beginning. Together with him, one of the characters in Sankhya is Prakriti, embodied in himself a female entity. At the same time, both heroes symbolize the spiritual and material components of being.
Or look into the distant past of the emergence of the Scandinavian runes. One of them, Algiz, symbolizes the movement to the light and at the same time the masculine principle. If the rune is turned over, Ir arises, having the feminine and striving for darkness, otherworldly, death.
The Kabbalistic teaching speaks of OR and Kli, which is also the interaction of the two principles and is compared in the philosophy of Kabbalah with light and vessel, spirit and matter. If we talk about more modern theories, then in the last century the Swiss psychiatrist Gustav Jung introduced the terms of Anima and Animus, implying all the same female principles (but in the psyche of a man) and, accordingly, male - in the female. And even the materialistic dialectics of Hegel, speaking of the unity and struggle of opposites, in fact confirms the theory of the teachings of Yin and Yang.
Our life in Yin-Yang style
Let's look around. Intuition, opposed to rationalistic thinking, is a female yin and male Jan. The strength of the sun and the soft flow of water, the warmth of the south and the cold of the north, creation and contemplation - all this is both yin and yang.
Good and evil, day and night - our world is completely woven from opposite concepts, but only by combining each other they become one. As in fact, a man and a woman, in each of which there is both yin and yang. The main thing is to achieve harmony and balance between them, which all the time reminds us of this ancient symbol.
If you were presented (or you yourself bought yourself) a similar pendant or coin - refrain from putting on a talisman right away. First, rinse it well or fill it with salt for some time-thus you will clean it of a random alien energy. And then act on it by the elements to which you belong: dip in the water, hold in flame, sprinkle with earth or substitute the wind of wind. Now this is really yours, and only your talisman.
