Natural births that pass in harmony with themselves and nature, without the intervention of medical workers and special equipment, after which the umbilical cord does not cut off, and the newborn remains still connected to the placenta, are called lotus. The name of the birth came from the custom to wrap the placenta into the leaves of the lotus.
Lotosal birth is becoming more and more popular in Russia every year. And this is not surprising, because the advantages of this method seem obvious, and the naturalness and ease of the process itself forces pregnant women to make a choice precisely in his favor.
Lotos childbirth: child and placenta
The peculiarity of the lotus genera that distinguishes them from any other, passing outside the maternity hospital, is to preserve the placenta on the umbilical cord before its independent discharge. In this case, the newborn remains connected to the umbilical cord and, accordingly, with the placenta. It is believed that the child’s body itself will reject the umbilical cord when it is fully prepared for this.
Important: the placenta and the umbilical cord are considered by adherents of lotus births as an organ of the child. Firing it means to deprive the child of a part of his body. In a natural way, the umbilical cord disappears on 2 to 7 days from birth.
After the placenta was scared, it is thoroughly washed and sprinkled with a large amount of salt. Then they are wrapped in cotton fabric and placed in this form in a “breathing” container (best - into a basket made of natural material).
Due to the fact that the placenta “flows” and deteriorates, constantly being at room temperature, rinse and pour it with salt daily. Then the process of mummification begins and such thorough processing is no longer required.
Lotus birth: pros and cons of
The "advantages" of the lotus genera can be safely attributed to:
- the maximum smooth transition of the child from one environment to another
- gradual "gentle" inclusion in the work of all vital organs of the child
- the return to the child from the placenta is about 100 ml of blood saturated with nutrients
- exclusion of the risk of developing anemia in a newborn
- obtaining an albumin protein that accelerates the process of eliminating the fluid from the lungs
- lack of problems with leaving the umbilical wound, as it is simply absent
- the formation of an ideal navel after the independent discharge of the umbilical cord
Important: children who are cut off the umbilical cord shortly after birth are not received by a huge number of stem cells necessary for the normal functioning of organs.
Disadvantages of lotus births:
- inevitable development in a child physiological jaundice due to increased bilirubin
- high probability of the transition from the placenta of the harmful substances accumulated by her during pregnancy
- inconvenience associated with the need to move the placenta with the child
- the need for regular placenta processing
Important: lotus birth is impossible with the likelihood of Rh conflict and entering the umbilical cord.
Lotus births of doctors
The opinions of doctors about the benefits of lotus genera diverge. And this is understandable, because adherents of traditional medicine insist on cutting the umbilical cord immediately after childbirth, explaining this by the probability of blood loss and the transition from the placenta of a large number of harmful substances. At the same time, supporters of lotus births argue their choice with all the above positive moments of this method.
However, at the request of the woman, even obstetricians of ordinary maternity hospitals must make concessions and allow the child to leave the child with the placenta, if only until the pulsation stops. If childbirth proceeded normally, and there are no contraindications, the intersection of the umbilical cord can be delayed.
Important: in general recommendations for childbirth, it is proposed to cut the umbilical cord at least a minute after birth or after the end of the pulsation.
Lotos birth on Bali
On Bali, lotus birth is a natural path of the birth of a child into the light. Many modern Bali women still prefer this way of childbirth, despite the fact that they have the opportunity to give birth to an ordinary hospital. Bali has special lotus birth centers in which they help to be born to “lotus” children. One of these clinics is Bumi Sikhat, where women come to give birth from different parts of the globe.

The Indonesians consider the placenta an angel-guardian of newborn babies, who will be in the immediate vicinity until he transfers all his energy to them.
In ancient times in Indonesia, there was a belief that with children, whose placenta was cut immediately after childbirth, something terrible would certainly happen. Such kids were prophesied by diseases, misfortunes and even an imminent death. There is a mention of this in the Holy Book of Lontar. There it is also noted that the placenta should have good protection after birth.
The Balinese revere Ari-Ary throughout life. At the same time, every evening they thank their angel in a day, and in the morning they greet and ask for support.
According to the customs of the Balinese, the placenta after the natural department, wrapped in white fabric, must be drunk into the ground in the courtyard of the house. If a boy was born, she is buried to the right of the door, if the girl is on the left. Those who dream that the child grow free and strong should drown it in a natural pond.
If the nursing Balika does not have enough milk, it learns the chest with the earth in which the placenta is buried.

Lotus birth in Russia: in Moscow and St. Petersburg
Lotos birth in Russia has recently been practiced more and more often. For their conduct, you no longer need to look for special clinics. Even in the usual maternity hospital in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities of Russia, you can agree to conduct full or partial lotus genera.
So that there are no misunderstandings in the process of childbirth, the details and features of the upcoming event should be discussed in advance. To do this, it is necessary to draw up and approve a plan of childbirth, conclude a written contract with the hospital.
Important: it is desirable that the lotus childbirth pass under the supervision of an experienced doula, which will not allow doctors to make a mistake.
Lotus birth: reviews
Oksana, 28 years old: “It was lotus birth that my husband and I chose for our child (by the way, we did not specially recognize the gender of the baby in advance). The birth took place at home, with Doula. The birth itself passed quite easily, and there was less trouble with the placenta than I imagined. When the placenta was born, we sprinkled abundantly by sea salt and placed in a plastic food container. The first three days we did not move the child and, accordingly, the placenta. Then the placenta was completely dry. Outwardly, she looked like a dry tree of a tree. We just cut off most of the way to make it convenient to move with the child. ”
Sveta, 23 years old: “I don’t understand why there is so much noise around this lotus birth? What is the benefit of a child from the fact that a piece of rotting flesh is connected behind him? Just in order to form a flat navel? So it will turn out even and beautiful if it is good to take care of it and process it in time. Well, there is not immediately to cut the umbilical cord, and after some time, of course, there are many advantages. ”
Maxim, 45 years old: “My wife and I gave birth to our sons at home, both of them are lotus children. The umbilical cord itself fell off on the 7th day. We did not have any problems, neither in the time of childbirth, nor during the care of children and the placenta. ”
