The difference between the concepts of hypothesis, theory and law.
Content
Many of us consider the theory to be unconfirmed and abstract. In fact, this is not so. Scientists by the word theory imply not a point of view and not a thought, but much more. The conversational slang has nothing to do with the theory in science.
What is a hypothesis, theory, law: definition
Hypothesis - The point of view or idea that has not yet been confirmed. Experimental work can be carried out to confirm the hypothesis, but so far there are no specific conclusions, it is just a point of view.
Theory - In science, this term differs from ordinary use in life. In science, this means that practical work is carried out and there is a certain confirmation of the theory. Most often, confirmation was obtained not by one, but by several researchers. Therefore, the theory can be used and rely on it during various studies. In principle, the theory consists of many axioms and confirmed rules.
Law - This is a verbal or mathematical expression that has confirmation. That is, the law has already been proven and reliable as much as you can be reliable in science. In principle, the law and theory in science are not much different, as they have evidence. But the law is a more specific concept.
How the hypothesis differs from the law or theory among themselves: comparison, difference
Hypothesis - This is all just a thought or a point of view. In fact, she has not yet been confirmed. It can be equated with an idea or point of view. After evidence and conduct of a number of practical works and research, the hypothesis can become a theory or law.
There is no big difference between the law and the theory. The fact is that the law is a more private concept relating to a particular case. Theory may include several directions in a certain field of science.
What is the difference between the hypothesis and guesses, assumptions?
The hypothesis itself is a guess and assumption. Word comes from Greek ὑπόθεσις - assumption. Regarding the hypothesis in science, it can be considered a guess that can be checked by a critical experiment. Subsequently, the hypothesis is proved and it becomes a fact or theorem.
As you can see, in science there are somewhat different concepts than in ordinary life. Therefore, it is not worth saying “this is just a theory”, since in science this is not an opinion at all, but an already proven system of assumptions.
