“Dead Souls” is a characteristic of Manilov for the composition, a lesson of literature: appearance, artistic image of the family, economy

There are a lot of heroes in Gogol's Dead Souls and they are all diverse in characterization. Let's look at the image of Manilov.

In the world masterpiece “Dead Souls”, Gogol managed to create various images of serfs from life with the help of real situations from life. Each image has its own unique features and is backed up by satire. The author masterfully exposes their deceit, unprincipled and irresponsibility.

Gogol with good nature ridicules human vices and disadvantages. But each of his phrase contains a deep meaning. Due to the inorganization of the landowners, the common people-the peasants-suffer primarily. Serfdom has a negative effect on the whole society as a whole. The landowners turn into parasites and lazy people, and the peasants become oppressed slaves.

Description of the appearance of Manilov

The most vivid characters of the work are the landowners participating in a reckless deal. Events unfold around the adventures of Chichikov’s official. Manilov acts as the first landowner, to whom Chichikov addresses a proposal to buy “dead souls”. The acquaintance of Chichikov and Manilov takes place at the governor's reception. Thanks to similar character traits, they quickly find a common language.

The image of Manilov described by Gogol creates a pleasant impression. He certainly has his drawbacks. But against the background of the landowners from his environment, his actions are more harmless. The name of the landowner transmits the irony of the writer. Manilova “lures” laziness and, “beckons” for dreaminess and sentimentality. His behavior characterizes his environment.

Gogol represents Manilov a middle -aged man. His blond hair and blue eyes are complemented by a tempting smile. The male gaze was attended by mock sweetness: "The expression is not only sweet, but even sugary, similar to the Mikstera, which the clever secular doctor sent mercilessly ...". The landowner had the habit of squinting . The combination of a smile and narrowed eyes made Manilov similar to a contented cat, which the owner stroked. Gogol repeatedly emphasizes that when Manilova laughs, he is not visible behind a smile and eyes. The landowner's clothes were like his surroundings and did not allocate him from the crowd.

The characteristic of Manilov

Manilov creates the impression of a pleasant balanced person. Unlike other characters, he controls his anger and does not express dissatisfaction. Manilov’s goodwill has an interlocutor, but after a boring conversation, interest in him is lost. The landowner is difficult to captivate the current topic, since he observes neutrality in everything and does not have its own point of view.

The absence of clear goals and preferences makes it insignificant for society. Manilov always shows courtesy to others. The character of the landowner is difficult to give a concrete definition: “God alone could say what character Manilov has. There is a kind of people known under the name of either one, nor in the city of Bogdan, nor in the village of Selifan. "

  • In the past, Manilov was an officer, and since that time he was fixed after him the habit of smoking a pipe. Former colleagues respond to the landowner as a modest and delicate person.
  • Economic affairs were of little interest to the landowner. Manilov repeatedly dreamed of reconstruction of the house and expanding the economy, but all his thoughts did not find application in life. His excessive sentimentality and dreaminess moved the landowner from reality.
  • The landowner regrets his non -education. This fact prevents him from expressing himself. He even goes to the city to chat with educated people. But such actions acquire the character of ordinary window dressing.
  • The thoughts voiced by the landowner had a very abstract character. There was no specificity and detail in them. The constant use of uncertain binders in sentences betrays its self -doubt.
  • In a conversation with Manilov, interest in the conversation disappears already at the very beginning. The author with the satire describes a short dialogue with the landowner, in which in the first minute, Manilov captivates, in the second minute leads the interlocutor into a stupor, and in the third, a complete bewilderment and desire to avoid his dreary society are created.
  • The landowner lacks the interlocutor with whom you can reflect on abstract philosophical topics. He would like to live with such a friend under the same roof, talk with him for hours to fly, settling under a tree.

More successfully the situation is with the letter. His beautiful and neat handwriting was marked by Chichikov. Manilov was one of the few, for whom it is not necessary to correct errors in the papers.

Manilov’s positive qualities include him hospital and sympathy for your environment. The landowner was very happy about the arrival of the guests. He considered the people of his circle honorable and in love. In an interview, he openly expresses his delight and sympathy. He sees their positive aspects in people, and closes his eyes to the shortcomings.

Manilov family

Manilov is an exemplary family man and in this regard, you can take an example from him. With his wife Lisa, the landowner is 8 years old. During this time, the spouses had two sons, in whose life the teacher takes an active part. The boys had unusual names - Femistoklis and Alkid. For Manilov, it is important that society draws attention to this. The eldest son is a little smarter than the youngest, but in general both received due education.

Manilov experienced the most tender feelings for his wife. Lisa was beautiful and well brought up. Its main drawback is passive to household chores. The households suited this state of affairs. In the dialog of the spouses, touching appeals to each other were always present. Everyone rejoiced at a surprise in the form of sweetness or awkward trinket. The manifestation of tenderness was expressed by their love, but in some points it looked absurd. Gogol presents their sweet relations as parody and comic.

Manilov farm

At the disposal of the landowner were about 200 houses, forest plantations and a pond. This is quite enough to successfully develop and get rich. But the landowner, succumbing to his own laziness, chose to entrust all the affairs of the manager.

Manilov prefers a calm life and does not bother at least sometimes to take part in business. The coordination of cases with the manager becomes ordinary convention. The landowner superficially discusses all problems and does not delve into their essence. The clerk who controls the main processes is inherently a drunkard. But even here, Manilov shows weakness and prefers not to change anything.

  • Near Manilov’s estate, instead of the usual beautiful parks and gardens, several floral plantations in the English style are placed. A gazebo is built for relaxation. But all this is in a neglected state, which characterizes their owners. The gazebo became a place for the landowner for his thoughts and fantasies. She even came up with an absurd name and gave the status of a cult structure to solite the owner.
  • Manilov’s thoughts constantly float into the distance, away from reality. While the house is blown by the seven winds and is absolutely not protected, the landowner reflects on the possibility of building an underground passage. Instead of taking part in current matters, he mentally designs a stone bridge through a pond. His dreams are filled with absurdity and frivolity.  Inappropriate for work, not particularly interested in business, he builds air castles.
  • The situation in the house and around the estate displayed the inconstancy of the Manilov family. There were both expensive and cheap things. In impeccable and in a neglected state. Beautiful furniture flaunted in one room, while in the other there was not enough ordinary. This state of affairs was immediately striking guests. For example, a dirty and lame stand was placed on a dining table next to the dignified candlestick. It gave the impression that everything around was not brought to a logical conclusion. The owners do not care.
  • Excerpts of beautiful phrases, pieces of exquisite furniture, sophisticated and ineptly set accessories are a continuation of the inner void of the inhabitants of the house.  An expensive wrapper hides cheap content.

Manilov’s indifference to business is reflected in the life of his serfs. On the one hand, without delving into their affairs, the landowner allows them to work calmly. On the other hand, the indifference of the owner does not solve their problems and does not bring changes for the better.

Manilov's ownerlessness leads to the fact that serfs allow themselves to be drunk, steal and stubborn. If Sobakevich kept records of both living and “dead souls”, then Manilov has no idea how many serfs he has. One of the landowner's attempts to organize the correct score ended in complete confusion.

Due to such a negligent attitude, Manilov chose to simply give Chichikov “dead souls” and, plus, undertook to make up for the cost of execution. He presents a list in the form of a beautiful list fixed with silk tape. Which once again emphasizes his stupidity and detachment from real life.

The fact that Manilov did not think about his own material benefit and did not receive a penny from the transaction, characterizes him as a worthless owner. In this episode, the landowner's reasoning is immoral. He buys and sells people as an ordinary thing, without experiencing any feelings. This attitude is the highest point of immorality. The numerical number of dead peasants is summarized by one word "a lot." So only a person spiritually degraded can respond so calmly.

Manilov’s office looked like all other rooms. The walls of the office are covered with either blue or gray paint, which gives the atmosphere of lifelessness. With detailed examination, it becomes noticeable that some things are not in their place and are forgotten by their master. On the table and in the papers of the landowner, tobacco was scattered. The book, which Manilov abandoned a few years ago, was lying, waiting for his master. An unreadable work contradicts the argument of the landowner. He wants to be educated and educated, but at the same time he does not find time to read at least one book.

Gogol positions Manilov as a very pleasant person. The main problem of the landowner is a feeling of laziness, which inhibits his development. Compared to other personalities from the environment of Manilov, the landowner acts as a neutral character.  Own ineinivity turns the landowner into an uninteresting empty person. The sweet pleasant appearance hides an empty content. He does not bring any benefit to his environment. His image personifies the desire of society for unrealizable dreams. Manilov was the only meaning of the life of Manilov.

The landowner Manilov can be ranked to the "dead souls." He does not seek anything, respectively does not live, but exists. Such human uncertainty turns the best qualities into moral ugliness. In the image of the landowner, the human concept of “manovschina” is embodied - the desire in a fictitious and unreal, dreamy and idle attitude to life.
