Some do not even think when writing proposals about the correct setting of dash. They believe that you can put it anywhere and the reader will be clear. But is it right to use this approach? From the point of view of the Russian language - definitely not. However, in addition to the dash, there is also a hyphen, and how they differ we will tell in our article.

What is the difference between a dash and a hyphen?

You must remember that the hyphen is a spelling sign that shares the word, and it is short, and the dash refers to punctuation and it is long. Moreover, the latter will have gaps on both sides. We will tell you more about them.

In Soviet times, each printed publication looked very carefully and three different dashes were used in the text - hyphen, digital dash, also just a dash. Their view is like this: -, –, —. At the same time, the rule is as simple as possible: the hyphen is made inside the word, the digital dash is between the numbers, and the dash is in the sentence between words.

Usually, the digital dash is used in rare cases. Usually it is used instead of a simple dash, because it looks shorter and looks more attractive in the text. Today, writers usually choose which dash to use, but it should be used throughout the document. Of course, it would be better if it was longer than the hyphen and not only the gaps distinguished him.

A simple hyphen is often placed between the numbers, and some more like a dash. According to the rules of the digital dash, it can be set between numbers to indicate the range. In other words, it can be changed to "from ... by ...". The hyphen is suitable for approximate values \u200b\u200band they can be replaced by "either ..., or ...".
