How to get a gray color when mixing paints?
- The first - known to many, is the result of mixing black and white.
- The second is a combination of opposite tones, for example, red and green.
The larger the mixture of white paint, the lighter the shade of gray will be. And also, in addition to light and dark, gray is cold (with bluish notes) and warm (with red or beige) shade.
Gray color itself is softening. If we gradually add a little to any clean paint, then the color of the paint will be softened with each addition until it reaches a neutral gray color.
If you take the fashion sphere, then the most common gray are gray-blue (cold) and gray-yellow (warm). Such shades are also called blue and hut, respectively. Gray color is ahromatic, i.e. Received from the main kings, which, as you know, are three: green, blue and red.
So, the easiest way to get a gray color. If we dilute the concentration of black (this can be done with water or with the addition of white), then gray will come out. Depending on the degree of dilution, it will be lighter or darker.
If you make repairs and use oil paints, you can use the method of mixing various colors.
- So, for staining in ordinary gray, you must first mix black and white paints, reaching the desired saturation, and then paint the surface with the resulting composition.
- If you need a cold shade of gray - add to your resulting mixture of white and black, a little blue or green.
- Need a warm shade - drop ocher. You can, adding this or that paint to the resulting gray color, know for sure the names of your shade: gray-blue, gray-blue, gray-green.
- To achieve a silver "metallic" shade, antimony is suitable. And if you need a dark gray color, just add black to gray, light gray-respectively white.

Now about the watercolor paint. In addition to the traditional black and white mixing, you can try to use any shade of blue and brown, and then you will receive (depending on the shades you have chosen) various gray variations. There is generally scope for imagination and creativity: mix two blue shades with one brown, add red or green. And if you use not ready brown, but create it yourself (from red and green), then get another shade of gray.
Important: it is necessary to achieve a lighter or dark shade only with the help of water, but not white paint.
Flower mixing options to obtain gray
- Classic gray is obtained by mixing white with a small amount of black.
- Cold gray will turn out when adding blue or green to gray.
- Pearl gray is achieved by adding white and black small amounts to a mixture.
- Warm gray - add ocher or umbra to the resulting black and white gray.
- The gray-blue will come out when added to a white light gray and a little blue.
- Gray-green is also white and light gray with the addition of green.
