Remembering the past, Nikolai Alekseevich, realizes that their story was extraordinary and could turn into pure happiness, but at the same time does not allow the thought that he did incorrectly. Nadezhda, as the last reflection of the sun at sunset, for a moment lit up his soul, returned the dreams and desires of youth, opened the unusual fullness of real feeling for a brief moment. The heroine has preserved this feeling for life.
This random meeting could turn time, return the joy of life. But Nikolai Alekseevich does not want to act “wrong”, referring to the views and laws of society. He leaves the inn, not realizing that fate gave him a second chance to be honest with himself and find a happy old age.

Fidelity to oneself is the courage to go only to your own way, not dropping to lies, selfishness, greed or fear of condemnation.
